How to replace the Alternator on a Chevrolet Corvette

Corvette C6 Alternator Installation

My alternator failed during an autocross event. A good friend (and Porsche master mechanic) saved the day by helping me locate a replacement part at a local auto parts store. He quickly fixed my car with some borrowed tools right out on the airport runway. I’m an amateur under the hood, and he took the time to train me on every step of the process. While it worked enough to get me home, the remanufactured part wasn’t up to the job, so I replaced it with a new OEM part (hence this video).

When my friend fixed my car out on that airport runway, I offered to pay him (he’s a professional mechanic after all)….but he refused the offer. All he asked was that I “pay it forward”. This video is a small part of that “pay it forward” effort.

In this video I demonstrate how to remove and replace an alternator on a Corvette C4. I discuss technical considerations like amperage of the alternator, cost considerations and warranty issues. A key thing to keep in mind when working on electrical components in a car is to disconnect the negative battery cable to avoid short circuits and potential damage to the ECM and other electronics. Also, many have opted to remove the A.I.R pump before it goes bad or after it does and replace it with a pulley adapter bracket or gut out the old one. I have more tips and info for this on my website
